Note that "especially American English." Probably that is the reason why you Brits haven't heard of this usage :).
The word "tote" has nothing to do with guns. It is used that way sometimes by people who wish to imply a negative feeling when describing someone who has a gun.
"Tote" can be used anywhere "carry" can be used. Also, a small bag can be called a "tote bag".
So, it can be said that, " I tote my gun in my tote bag." :D :D
