    ticket on?

    Hi,

How to make question that in Russian is as simple as this
Где я могу купить билет на поезд Прага - Хеб ?

I know that билет на поезд = train ticket, but I have doubt, that
Where can I purchase ticket on train Praha - Cheb?
    will do the trick...

The confusion is because sometimes in Europe you can't buy ticket at a train station, but should get it from conductor instead.

    Yeah, a lot!
It was very thoughtful to put 1. before the actual answer, Deborski, because I have another question:
How to refer correctly to single unit of the consist, which in Russian is simply "вагон":
there are cars, carriages, couches and big mess in my head...

I don't ride trains very often in the US, but usually we refer to the individual вагоны as "cars" or "train-cars." I am not sure how that would appear on the actual train ticket though.

I also noticed, that trains are not being depicted in American movies.

That's because most of America's trains are used for shipping cargo, not for human passengers. We have Amtrak - but it is very expensive (airfare is sometimes cheaper) and very limited. There are not many places you can go by Amtrak. America is not like Europe, Britain or other parts of the world where trains are a normal method of daily transportation. Americans ride Amtrak mainly for vacation or sightseeing.

By coincidence, I recently started playing the funny game on my tablet:

No wonder I was sure, that America has dense railway network. And because I like traveling on trains, I was sure that American railways are being utilized aggressively.

It may appear dense, but most of the railways are just used to ship cargo. Amtrak exists, but it is not a common method of transportation here. People in America love their cars.

The "poor man's" method of transportation in the states is by bus. Grayhound Lines, usually. This was how I sometimes traveled when I was still a student in college. It's usually cheaper than renting a car, but it's not the most comfortable way to travel.

Also, though a few of our major cities (New York, Chicago, San Francisco) have subways, most cities rely on buses for public transportation. At my last job in Spokane, I rode a city bus to work every day.

And, in case anyone wants to explore the subject more, here is an article which explains a little about why Americans don't ride trains much.

The Economist explains: Why don't Americans ride trains? | The Economist

American railroads accounted for just 17.2 billion passenger-kilometres in 2010, according to Amtrak, America's government-backed passenger rail corporation. In the European Union, railways accounted for nearly 400 billion, according to International Union of Railways data. When you adjust for population, the disparity is even more shocking: per capita, the Japanese, the Swiss, the French, the Danes, the Russians, the Austrians, the Ukrainians, the Belarussians and the Belgians all accounted for more than 1,000 passenger-kilometres by rail in 2011; Americans accounted for 80. Amtrak carries 31m passengers per year. Mozambique's railways carried 108m passengers in 2011.
