Thou shalt know thy enemies wel...

"Thou shalt know thy enemies well, for they wield not the hammer, and forest dwellers be they".

It seems "are" is supposed to be there rather than "be"?
    Thanks!

Sings we a dances of wolves
    Who smells fear
    And slays the coward
Sings we a dances of mans
    Who smells gold
    And slays his brother
And this. How can it be? As far as I know such grammar is absolutely incorrect. Or in what aspects it can be used this way? ((((

It is written by a native english speaker, so it must be perfectly correct, but...

Будешь знать ты врагов своих, в руках их будут не молоты, но будут они лесными жителями.

они будут (будущее время по русски). Напоминает цитату из какого-нибудь религиозного текста. Ты возьми библию на англ. почитай, там таких оборотов достаточно много.

Или Шекспира, или Александра Поупа (хотя этот вроде старался придерживаться правил грамматики). Вообще читай англ. классику, а не современных авторов. Она сильно помогает в понимании языка.

Раньше в английском языке глаголы спрягались:

    I see
    Thou seest
    He sees

    Рамиль, переводится так, я думаю:

Знай же врагов своих, ибо нет в их руках молота, и лесные обитатели они суть.

Но я не про перевод Я про использование "be".

Абсолютно нормально для такого текста. Кстати (ИМО) даже грамматически приемлемо.

Thou shalt (уже буд. время) ... for they wield (согласование времён)

Пусть нативы скажут, но там где be - это "кусочек" от конструкции will be/would be

Ну да, когда это они спрягались в виде:
Sings we a dances of mans?
    -- Да? Коту Ваське, бл##?
    -- Нет, Я кот Васька :-/

    Не факт, что это будущее.

Thou shalt not steal. -- Не укради (С) Библия

    Тебе не следует красть, буквально.
Но не "Не будешь ты красть" же.

Ни в коем случае will be and would be. Это настоящее время. Он говорит про pagans -- людей, которые поклоняются лесному богу Трикстеру, и они в настоящем времени живут в лесах и не носят молотов, как это делают члены секты говорящего.

Может автор сознательно искажал речь? Просто ради придания некоего "колорита".
А про will/would - shalt уже есть. Он же относится и к тому be, что тебя беспокоит.

Whoever wrote it wanted it to read like it was written in very old, only-just-modern-English English, or rather, wanted it to read like one particular stereotype of very old English.

It's total nonsense, don't stress about it.

Thou shalt know thy enemies well, for they wield not the hammer, and forest dwellers be they.

    Shalt относится к know.
Как shalt вообще может относиться к they? Shalt -- старая форма Shall, и употребляется только с thou (2 лицо).

Shalt определяет грамм. форму, которая влечёт согласование времён.
То бишь, если бы не было первой части, было бы:
They would wield not the hammer and forest dwellers (would) be they.

Ещё раз - ИМО - это предложение - грамматически правильно.
(хотя моё ИМО меня часто подводило)

Thou shalt know thy enemies well, for they wield not the hammer, and forest dwellers be they.
    Хорошо, я перефразирую ее по-современному.

You shall know your enemies well, for they don't wield the hammer, and they are forest dwellers.

Ты должен хорошо знать своих врагов, они не вооружены молотом и живут в лесу.
    Как тебе?

    Первый вариант мне нравился больше
Хотя по одному предложению не поймёшь. Надо ведь стилистику подгонять под контекст.

I wonder if it should say 'thine' instead of 'thy'? I was just imagining how it would be said if it were in the KJV bible. I have no particular knowledge of how to use this old style of grammar, it just seems to me that 'thine' would sound beter.

Thy is used before consonants and thine before vowels.

For example: thy deeds, but thine eyes.

    My dictionary says:

Thy is an old-fashioned, poetic, or religious word for 'your' when you are talking to one person.

Thine is an old-fashioned, poetic, or religious word for 'yours' when you are talking to only one person.
Please correct my mistakes if you can, especially article usage.

Не только, thine ставится перед словами с гласными 100%.

Mmmmyes, I wondered about the same thing.....
I think Vadim is right that "thine" is the plural of "thy".

Anyone seen Rtyom yet? This would be right up his street....

    Мля, я говорю еще раз.
Thy -- слова с согласными вначале
Thine -- слова с гласными вначале (И(!!!) то же самое, что yours)

    Всё равно что a/an thy/thine
    -- Да? Коту Ваське, бл##?
    -- Нет, Я кот Васька :-/
