    Strang words

Here are the text and sentences to it. It has some words I never seen before. Can you tel, which of this is correct?

    Text:
The force of their sudden collision left one of the players writhing on the ice in agony, while the other was hurled five feet into the air.

    Sentences:
    1. The onset of the injury was quaking with fear.
    2. The fatality was verging on a triumph.
    3. The injury caused him to be immersed in arrears.
    4. The proposition of the collision caused much cringing among most of the onlookers.
    5. The impact was so forceful that the injured player gyrated crazily to dull the pain.

I think that 5th is correct, but not sure.
Please, can You correct, if I have made mistakes.

I agree, №5 seems the best of the lot.

+1. But the real question is where do you find these sentences? I can never imagine native speakers actually saying these sorts of things -- even the correct ones! I guess the idea is just to see how well you studied your vocabulary?

The point is to show that the student understands the text. It's comprehension.

The text is a perfectly logical statement. The sentences that follow are all illogical in themselvesz and do not have a logical relationship to the text.
Unless this is test of non-logical thinking. Please explain the linguistic problem that you are trying to understand in more detail.

(Edited. L.) The whole point is, only ONE of the sentences makes logical sense; the student has to choose which one it is. And that is the 5th. And the sentences are to with the text as they are talking about the stuff that happened in the text.

Not for a native English speaker. The phrase "writhing in pain" has a completely different connotation than "gyrating wildly to dull the pain". The first phrase is passive, the second is active.

Um... no. They're both active. I will admit that "gyrating wildly to dull the pain" is a mighty strange phrase, though

I am a native English speaker. And both 'writhing in pain' and 'gyrating wildly to dull the pain' are in the active voice.

You said the senteces do not have a logical relationship with the text. Just because they don't repeat the exact same words in the exact same words does not mean they are not related.

"Gyrating wildy to dull the pain" is a much more specific, vivid and extreme description of 'Writhing in pain". But they still described the same thing. It still is describing what the text says.

FYI, this is what a text with unrelated senteces look like:

    TEXT:
John went shopping with his mother. They bought soup, rice, chips, cheese and bread. John loves shopping with his mother because he can make her buy him the food he loves.

    SENTENCES:
    1. The moon is round
    2. I like chess.
    3. My legs hurt.
    4. Britney Spears has two children.

I would accept your argument only if the sentence was phrased as follows:

The impact was so forceful that the injured player gyrated crazily from the pain.
    DO IT YOURSELF!

You have no idea what your talking about, that doesn't even sound good. My argument isn't correct because the author didn't use the exact words and phrasing that you have whimsically chosen?

Why have you taken a perfectly grammatical and decent sentence and turned it into something a 14 year-old American schoolboy would write?

    You are clearly wrong.

Number 5 is correct. Case closed.

No keep the case open! This is an important branch of medicine: gyrations as analgesia, only effective in done wildly and preferably on ice.
Perhaps the player was brain damaged by the impact or he would have taken aspirin or got his mummy to kiss it better.
One shouldn't knock it without trying it though. I will certainly try gyrating a bit next time I suffer any pain or discomfort.
Returning to the text, I would like to know if it was the one on the ice or the one who went up in the air who gyrated. I hope it was the latter thus giving birth to the quadruple Salcow.
I'd like to sample whatever the author of these exercises drinks / uses and am really looking forward to another installment.

What are you talking about? When someone suffers sudden pain, i.e. stubbing there toe or something it's a natural reflex to hop around a bit.

Next time I injure myself I'll calmly stand up and silently without flinching search for an asprin.

    stubbing there toe

    --should be spelled --

    Stubbing their toe
Give someone fire, and you keep them warm for a single night. Set them on fire, and you'll keep them warm for the rest of their life.
