    a little letter

    Here's my attempt:

Greetings, Mr. Matt! I am Artem, Valentina’s friend. Tanya wrote about me. Valentina told me that you would be able to help me. I am a fourth-year mathematics student at the Russian State University of Kaliningrad and I took part in a student program called “work and travel USA”. Here is the link through which you can learn about this program: http://interexchange.org/ I am collecting all of the necessary documents for this program; one of the documents should be a job offer from the employer. The employer just has to complete the form (which I attached in this email) and confirm it when InterExchange calls. There is one more job offer in the attachment for my friend Alex. He is studying with me in the same department. If it is possible, please find him a job as well. I shall be very grateful to you for your help.

    Sincerely, M A.

P.S. I can send letters of recommendation for employers from English-speaking teachers of mine here at the university, if necessary.

    Information for employer:

We have tickets for the 13th of June and I think that we can start work on June 15th.

    Re: a little letter

Edit: I think Moryachka's looks good, too -- basically just stylistic differences...

For some reason I didn't see Moryachka's post until I finished, but here's what I wrote:

Dear Sir, [Unless you guys are really close to Matt I would use "sir" here -- you really should find out his last name if this is formal, and say Dear Mr. XXX]

I am Valentina's friend, Artem. I believe Tanya wrote to you about me. I was told by Valentina that you could help me. I am a fourth-year student at the Russian State University of Kant, where I study in the mathematics department and take part in a student program that is called “Work and Travel USA”. If you would like more information about this program, you may view the following website: <http://interexchange.org/>. I am currently collecting the necessary documents for participation/application [I'm not sure what your exact status is, DR -- you need to change these two words accordingly] in/to this program. One of the required documents is a job offer from an employer. The employer should complete the form (which I attached to this email) and be prepared to confirm its accuracy when InterExchange calls. If it is at all possible, please provide another job offer for my friend Alex. He also is studying in the same department and desires employment in through this program. I am very grateful to you for any assistance you can provide.

P.S. I can send letters of recommendation for employers from our teachers form university speaking in English, if necessary. [If you are putting this under P.S., I think it should come after your closing (Yours faithfully) --you might just want to add this sentence into the paragraph above]

Yours faithfully, [First Name Last Name]

    Information for employer:

We have already purchased tickets for arrival on June 13 and I believe that we will be available for work on June 15.

Thanks a lot for your help

What if he shortens his name to "Art"? (this question is mostly directed at native English speakers)

Mmm it wouldn't make much difference I don't think. Anyway most people find foreign names cool as long as they can pronounce them.

Actually I have heard "Art" before as a short for Arthur. You don't have to officially change your name, but just use "Art" as a nickname. Introduce yourself as "Art", just like that I sometimes introduce myself as "Vinnie" when my real name is (gasp) Vincentz.

There's always "Artie" too. Another option could even be to just stick his имя and отчество together and call himself by his two initials -- thus, if you're Артем Иванович you become A.I. Just a thought.

With all that being said, I would still say just stick with Artyem -- (maybe if you want to make sure the pronounciation is closer to Russian go by Artyom, not Artyem -- it's a bit easier for English-speakers). You should use whatever you want to use -- pronouncing a two-syllable name ain't exactly rocket science, so they'll just have to get over it.

Lol is there an American capable of pronouncing Artyom? It will become either Artawm or Archawm . I'd say use Artie or Archie.

Dunno about A.I. Many a computer geek will chuckle at it, if not worse .

    I would recommend Art.

Artie sounds kind of cutesy, although in the 1940s-50s there was a well-known band leader Artie Shaw.

Still, Art is the best choice.

Nah, I'd say the corrupted version would be more like "Art-yom" or "Arty-om"...if only his last name were somthing like "Khrushchev" he could go by the cool "A.X." -- Ax!
