He turned out to be a charming, well-educated man with a practice green on his front lawn and a son at New York University.

What is 'practice green'? It has something to do with golf as far as I understand. Is it necessarily artificial or natural field? And what could be the size of it?

Yes it's about golf. It's a place to practice golf.

Not a field, but a small component of one. A golf course consists of a number of various components, including grassy stretches, bushes, sand traps, water hazards, etc. A green (or putting green) is an area with short-cut grass containing one of the many holes found on the course.
