Dear Angie,
Gosh, don’t you Americans read at all? I stayed with Mrs. Jones for 3 months and once I asked her if she could advised me something to read. Mrs. Jones was a bit confused and replied that she hadn’t been reading any book for a long time. And then I discovered, that there’s no library in her house. I thought about an idea, that she is not into reading. But it ended up that it’s a hassle for her to lug all these books from place to place and it’s really hard to find time to read. You know, that she moves a lot and always overwork. I had a culture shock. I got used having a big library backhome. Do you think Americans are well-read?
One day I went with her to a drugstore to buy some new books. I found a spy thriller. It was written there “the bestseller of the year”. I thought I found a novel that everyone is raving about, but when I picked up another book. It was also the bestseller. I was surprised. Mrs. Jones explained that it was just a sales pitch and all those books had no literary value. She called them trash. I bought an interesting “how-to” manual which gives a lot of gardening tips. I think it’s quite useful. And then I discovered a lot of interesting self-assertion books and bought some of them. I really like Dale Carnegie and what do you think about him? I think it’s very important nowadays to be able to say “no”, get rid of some persistent people, so that nobody will not push you around.
When we were returning home, I saw a paper boy. I asked Mrs. Jones where I can buy magazines or newspapers. And she advised me to go to a grocery store. I decided to buy 2 papers “The Times” and the “Washington Post”. You know, I fed up reading newspapers because of a yellow press which drives me up the wall, but these papers are really informative and I can improve my English reading them. Also I bought there my favourite magazine “National Geographic”. It’s so interesting! And illustrations are really excellent. I saw a lot of gossip magazines like backhome: you name it they have it. I believe that there’s rarely an ounce of truth in it.
So, I come up with an idea to read American classics. Maybe, you can advise me something. Please let me know what you think. I hope to hear from you soon.

Maybe It should be changed to "Mrs. Jones replied that she hadn’t read any books for a long time" ? Am I right???

Could you test the following sentences:
---I advise something to read to him
---I advise something to him
---I advise him to read

(I couldnt understand why I need to use the preposition "on" in the sentence "I advise him on something to read". I thought that "on" is used in the sentence "I advice with him on the matter")???

Could you test the following sentences:
All of the following should probably be in the past tense 'advised'. Except for the last sentence I would use 'reccomend' instead of 'advise'. Advice is more general as in 'I advised hime to read' where as reccomendations are more specific, like 'I reccomended he read Shakespeare'.

That sounds really strange. It would be better as 'Written on it was "The bestseller of the year."'

"I advise something to read to him" means you're giving advice to "something" and telling it to read to "him". Like a mother would read a bedtime story to her child, you're telling "something" to read to "him." I think what you meant was "I advise him to read something."

"I advise something to him" sounds strange. I can't think of a sentence where you can advise somebody a noun. You can say "I advise him to <VERB>". You can't say "I advise pizza to him" or "I advise him pizza." It would have to be "I advise him to eat pizza." OR you could use a preposition, such as "I advise him about the dangers of eating pizza" but in this context, "advise" takes on nearly the same meaning as "tell." So "I advise him about pizza" is nothing at all like the sentence "I advise him to eat pizza."

"I advise him to read" is a perfectly normal sentence.

"something to read", in your last sentence sentence, modifies the verb. However, in order to do that, it must be in a preposition, so "on" is appended to it. Likewise in the sentence "I advise with him on the matter." However, that "with" shouldn't be there; it should be "I advise him on the matter."

Why isn't it "I got used to having..."?

This sort of goes along with what fishfanatic was saying. the verb "Advise" is typically used in situations where a person is making an important decision - such as which classes to enroll in (at a university), whether or not to take a job far away, etc... Basically things that will affect ones life.

In a situation where you are making a decision about which book to read, or what movie to see, the verb "Recommend" or simply "Tell" is often used. For example:
"I hope she can recommend a good book"
"Can you tell me a good book to read?"

I would probably say it as "I suggest something for him to read." Or even "I suggest a book for him." You could also say "I suggest him a book." but this one doesn't sound as good to me.

Also, put the period/comma/etc. inside the quotation marks. This is true even though there is no period on the heading at the top of the actual newspaper. One problem that a lot of Americans have with English grammar.
