Господа!
Я думаю, что в каком-нибудь учебнике этот вопрос рассматривается, но мне к сожалению такой не попадался (или я невнимательно читал).
А вопрос в следующем: я всегда путаюсь, когда нужно выбрать английский эквивалент слову "другой". Есть "other" и "another". А "other" еще употребляется с артиклем и без него. Объясните пожалуйста идиоту. Если можно - с примерами. Или дайте ссылку, если не затруднит. Спасибо.

another- другой, неопределенный, употребляется только с единственным числом, или если дальше следует числительное или "few"
e.g. I need another three driving lessons before my test.
I need another few days before ............
The other - употребляется с ед. и мн. числом. и обычно имееют в виду один из двух.
e.g. The seat(s) is(are) free; the other seat(s) is(are) taken.
other - употребляется с мн.ч.
e.g. There must be other ways of solving the problem

Another refers to one more or a different or alternative one.
"Help yourself to another biscuit", in the way that Nuta suggests:-
"I need another three driving lessons before my test", or
"There must be another way to solve this problem".

Other can refer to the remaining: -
"I read the first three chapters of the book today. I will read the other chapters tomorrow", or
"I read the first three chapters of the book today. I will read the others tomorrow"
Other can act as a (singular) pronoun: -
"I saw two people in the car. One was a man, the other was a woman".
Other can mean additional: -
"There are other possibilities".
So you could say, "There is another possibility" - but that limits it to one other possibility

I have had this same problem, but in russian. I don't know when to use Другой, чужой, различно. I've narrowed it down to just saying Другой because when i said различно they luaghed, and i only rarely hear чужой.

It's различный (since the other words you mentioned are adjectives).
другой vs. различный
другой is used when you contrast one object (or a set of objects) with another.
различный is used when you mean that a set contains objects that are different.
For example, let's assume the following statements:
У Вани зелёная машина. У Кати красная машина.
We can say:
Машина Вани - зелёная, а у Катиной машины другой (but not "различный") цвет.
У машин Кати и Вани различные(but not "другие") цвета.
If you say У машин Кати и Вани другие цвета. that would mean that the colors of both cars are different from some other, not mentioned here color.

чужой means not belonging to you, often with a negative shade.
For example:
Не трогай эту игрушку, она чужая. - Don't touch this toy, it's not yours.
