No, it really doesn't. It sounds distinctly like Стал. Any why would I start with "potatoes - potatos" unless I was Dan Quayle? Surely you mean "to-MAY-to/to-MAH-to".
It is sounds more СТОЛ than СТАЛ. And, don't start about "Potatoes - potatos"
