Т.е. я могу сказать
- осталось 3 рубля - 3 roubles left
Но не могу сказать
- осталось 100 км - 100 km left
- осталось 2 часа - 2 hours left
Это звучит как "проехали 100 км", "летим два часа".
А надо говорить
- still 100 km to go
- still 2 hours to go (to fly, to wait)
Я правильно понял?

Я думаю, что так вполне можно сказать (конечно, что употребить в конкретном случае зависит от контекста). По моему именно конструкция типа "2 hours left" чаще всего употребляется в компьютерных программах.
Что касается 100 km left, то, мне кажется, что так тоже можно сказать. Я думаю, если можно сказать "100 km left to go" то в разговорной речи вполне естественно опустить "to go". Если я не права, надеюсь, native speakers меня исправят.

You are entirely right - as usual - except possibly with regard to the 'computer programs' bit: '2 hours left' is pretty much universal. Although if you're pretentious (and I am), you'll say - nay, intone - 'two hours remain'.

-'Has 'The Passion Of The Christ' finished?'
-'No. There are two hours left. Indeed, Our Lord And Saviour ain't even dead yet.'

-'Caller, your time is up!'
-'What?! I have [there are] ten minutes left, surely?

и.т.д. ad infinitum.

I thought so, I just mentioned computers as the most evident example because even those whose English is rather poor could have come across it when dealing with programs. By "чаще всего" I meant that this construction is used most of the time, not that here it is used more than in the other fields.

I'm not sure I totally understood every detail of the discussion, but I just thought I'd chip in:
'to go' can be used with distance, but also, totally illogically, with time:

'There are two hours to go.'
'two hours left' is more common - and maybe better English

It's only because 'I wentn't' is impossible that you should say 'I didn't go'.

The logic of that totally escapes me.. Would you make the same statement about "He aten't the cake" ?
I realise you were trying to explain emphatics, but still ...

If you want to emphasise a past simple negative, you should say:

I did not go to the cinema! (bold indicates verbal stress).

Without emphasis, in speech, always use 'didn't' rather than 'did not'.

Well, excuse me, but this майк-guy was making it seem as if the 'did' construction in the past was only use in the 'Past Emphatic'. But as you know, 'I didn't go' and 'did you go?' don't necessarily imply any kind of emphasis. So, therefore, I meant to say the 'past (or present) emphatic' only applies in the affirmate (I did do it!), not in the negative and interrogative.

прошло 3 часа, осталось - 2.
Я думал, что тут как раз и надо употреблять to leave.
