Thread: Can McCain be presidential candidate? Question to Americans mostly.

I couldn't find a subforum for political questions, so I am placing it here....

My questions are:

1) Can McCain be presidential candidate again (any year, not necess. this one)? I suppose he can acc.to legislation, but has it ever been practised in US history when a candidate that had lost tried to win it again. Or traditionally (maybe due to ethics or smth.) they never try again?

2) If Obama loses this time, can he theoretically try it again next time? This would be another case, because in this case it's someone who is a one-time president.

Nixon lost to Kennedy in 1960. Nixon then won in 1968.

Yes and it has happened.

Our 22nd and 24th President was Grover Cleveland. He was the ONLY president to serve two non-consecutive terms (1885–1889 and 1893–1897). He lost to Benjamin_Harrison in 1889 and then won again in 1893. Under our rules for "numbering" presidents, as Cleveland served two non-consecutive terms, he is counted twice in the numbering of the presidents.


Also of note about Nixon and President Ford. President Ford was not elected Vice President or President when he first became President. Ford was the first person appointed to the vice-presidency under the terms of the 25th Amendment (after Spiro Agnew had resigned). Then when Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974, he became President. Ford was the only President of the United States who was never elected President nor Vice-President by the Electoral College.

Just as a side comment, I remember when that all of the Nixon/Ford stuff happened and as a child it was soooooo confusing to me! Even now it seems like a script from a Hollywood movie as it has that "perfect storm" feel to it.

Hahaha... I only know because I have two daughters studying US History and National, State and Local Government right now!!!

You're related to Grover??? That must be an interesting story all by itself! Inquiring minds want to know more!

On my mother's side, her name was Cleveland. I don't know any more than that, unfortunately.
