I've heard of an identical English phrase "to fathom the unfathomable".

BTW, you actually can square a circle

The impossible problem as set by the ancient Greeks was actually to square a circle using only a compass and straightedge and in a finite number of steps - the website that you quoted actually admits this impossible. Removing these constraints makes it quite easy to produce a square and circle of equal area.

To change the subject just a little, is there a similar phrase in Russian for "the squared circle" i.e. a boxing/wrestling ring?
