    Traditional dances

I know this is not the most lively of the boards (to put it mildly ), but I think I'm in the right place to ask this, so here goes.

    1.

I'm looking for recordings (preferably DVD, but VHS will do if nothing else is available) of traditional dance groups, and I don't really have an idea where to start (have found some on eBay, but all US sellers, so very expensive and pretty complicated to get. Russia is Europe after all, so there MUST be something available closer by...)
I'm mainly looking for the group dances (you know, the girls and boys that look as if they've stepped off a Palekh box and are on wheels - doing the most lovely figure dances), but anything will do really, as long as it's good quality.
I was thinking the Moiseyev ballet must have something like that, but I can't find it....
Any names of dance groups, and any info on how to get recordings of them are welcome!

I may take a short trip to Moscow and StP in august/september, so if you know a good shop for that kind of thing, that would be great too!

    2.

    Any dancers on board here?
Does anyone know about summer schools/workshops (doesn't necessarily have to be in summer ) where they teach these dances (even to stoopid foreigners)? It would be great to get a taste of them first-hand....

    Thankee muchly!

PS: Ramil - "Thankee muchly!": again very bad, deformed English for "thank you very much"
At least this time, I'm aware of it!!!

PPS: edited for about a million typos.... reeaaallllly hot here! :P
Ой, голова у меня кружится |-P ...... and my brain hurts too....

These are Sufi dancers, not native folk dancers, but I wouldn't be surprised if one of the контакты listed in M or SPb could point you in the right direction.

    http://www.russianfolklore.com/main.htm

in Moscow go to Дом книги on New Arbat I think it is. Very large bookstore, might have recordings.

Good questio B-Y!!! The timing couldn't have been better too, a chat friend does "native" dances in Izhevsk (the Steam Powered Pelmeni? ) , and I seem to be in the dog-house with her now. I'll check out the links from the others and try to get back in her good graces.

    Baba Yaga sez:
I know this is not the most lively of the boards (to put it mildly ),

    I say:
You're right and shame on all of us
The Russian students are landing here on the Cape now, so I get a couple or three months of cultural exchange. Woo Hoo!!! I get to learn Things of Great Importance and teach them baseball and "(New York) Yankees Suck"
I'm easily amused late at night...

TATY - *rotflmao* - yep, something like that! I luv 'm!!!

Chaika and Lampada: thanks for links and adresses! Chaika, you're right, via via via those contacts, it should be possible to find something - it's clearly people involved in organizing workshops.... I'm only worried that my very basic Russian won't be able to handle it - but oh well, хорошое упражнение... The worst thing that can happen is that those poor Russians think that westerners are crazy eejits....

Yes, I did. (Google is my best friend, BTW )
But all the links that come up are US based, and that's what I wanted to avoid - that's why I asked for sources closer by . For several reasons: A) DVDs: zone 1 - can be handled, I have a multizone player; B) NTSC! Nuff said!! C) Long distance shipping: I have ordered LPs (yes, the oldfashioned black, flat things) a couple of time from the US or Canada, and one time in three they're broken by the time they arrive.. D) TAXES!!!! On one of the broken records that arrived here recently (that I had paid 36$ for in the first place(!)), I had to pay an import tax of another 15€! Pretty expensive for a broken set of (secondhand) records

So I try to avoid US sellers if I can help it

Lampada - if ever I get over my US-sellers-phobia, I will empty the store at russiandvd.com!!! They have suuuuch great stuff! Pretty expensive though - which is logical: they import it from Europe first, and then export it back to Europe (in my case) - why can't they just have a European branch?!

    Capecoddah -
Send her flowers, man!! I'll pay for them!
Seriuosly, just use me as a good excuse to get back into favour with her - a neutral third person usually does the trick
*LOL* @ the "Steam Powered Pelmeni" - have you got that copyrighted?! I might just use it as the title of a dance, teehee.....

Lucky you getting a "local immersion course" Does that mean we'll find you posting entirely in Russian in three months' time?

    BabaYaga,
I get an immersion every summer since 2000, I met a lost girl on her bike, crying.... I helped her find her job , we became friends and I started learning Russian. 2003 I had 2 Belarusians find me via ICQ, and helped a friend of 1 find a job and a place to live (my spare room). Bought "Russian in 15 Minutes a Day".... I work for a motel in the summers here, and get to talk to the maids and ground crew in Russian. The head maid speaks English, Portugese and native Italian. We call her "сука", and she is proud!
I'll try to find someone I can learn with, and pollute with baseball and other American things this summer.
I go to the local market and buy 1 item at a time so I can chat with the girl at the counter...
Flowers to Russia? A dozen sent flowers and a dozen phone calls I can fly there!I send "virtual" flowers and lobster dinners. The photos of the pelmini I made dropped her, I think a guy making dinner is a different thing in Russia. My 2002 friend was impressed I could cook. She has sent a picture of her new kitchen with 24 (count them,24) spices. I read in St Petersburg Times "Russians think salt & pepper are spices"
More later, I have to go to the motel and say Привет! Как Вас зовут? Говорите, пожалуйста, медленнее, Я плохо говорю по-русски to the new maid.
I'm easily amused late at night...

Whoa. Now that was a cultural thing I didn't know about Russians!
OK guys - if you ever come and visit me, don't go into shock when you come into the kitchen - I have a huge spice rack And not only salt and pepper on it either

    CapeC:
Говорите, пожалуйста, медленнее, Я плохо говорю по-русски
    My favourite sentence!

Funny that you have so many Russians around where you live. Here we have to look for them with a magnifying glass - and we're much closer to Russia!!!

Or maybe the ones we have here are just incredibly good at hiding!

Actually, I have a friend from Minsk that I see once a week - but she has perfect french, so........

OK Ok OK, not to insult the bland diet, my PALS were impressesed by spices.... Cayenne and a few "hot sauces" blew the Russkies away. "Mild" tacos killed a few.
    Kalinka & spice!
    Now we dance !

I sort of understand this, but please clarify. Does this ask the person you are speaking to to speak slower because your russian isn't very good?

I'm in a russian folklore group, which has a number of dances in the repertoire.
While I don't really consider myself a dancer, I'm sort of making progress with the activity, in that I don't fall too much out of the order

From 21 to 23 July we'll have a summer workshop in Noord-Brabant, The Netherlands, which will focus on singing (my main interest) but which will certainly include a fair share of dancing. We have a russian leader who is responsible for keeping everything as authentic as possible.

    Hey Pim!

    Thanks for the info!
That weekend, I'll already be in Poland for some dancing (and it isn't even Polish dancing, go figure! ), so it won't be this time round, unfortunately.....
But you guys have a great site, I'll make sure to check back now and then to see what you have going! Thanks!

Be sure to check out the "Festival" page; it lists a number of events occurring next November that might be of interest, including song/dance workshops and performances.

    Most kinds!
But there's only 24 hrs in a day, so I'm concentrating on Irish dancing, Zapateo, and tapdancing (to a lesser degree - again, lack of time....).
