Originally "атас" was an exclamation of warning in criminal slang ("Beware!", "Danger!"). Now it's used to declare something as either very good or very bad, depending on the context.
In this poem nobody was happy to see Stas, obviously, so it means "it was a total @@@" (put any appropriate slangish word instead of @@@).
