Thread: Trina and Sheryl

I am new to this group and excited about learning the Russian language. I am a newbie obviously and would like to ask about the two names I listed in the title.

Trina, how is it written in Russian and is it a Russian name? I would like to know the lineage of it and was wondering if it originated in Russia.

Sheryl, how is it written? I know it is not a Russian name.

Trina is not Russian. In Russian it would be spelled Трина. Sheryl becomes Шерил.

'Trina', to me, looks like a trendy abbreviation of 'Katrina', which originated in Greece.

I think you're right. I used to know a girl named Katrina who called herself Trina. Very clever ol fellow!

I had thought there was a variation of Trina in Russia as "Trena", so I wasn't sure if this was something that it might have originated from. I also appreciate the info on how to write the names. I am so excited about this language but lord this alphabet is so different than English. I gotta put on a different thinking cap for it.

"Sheryl" is normally spelled "Cheryl" you sure you got it right? Anyway it's irrelevant in Russian, which would have it Шерил, either way.

Cheryl is more common, but I'm seen Sheryl used a lot also.
