Is Шура a diminutive for Александр или Алексей? Where does this name come from? Is it a boy's name or girl's?

Both for Александр and Александра.

I think it came about like this:

Александр -> Алексаша -> Саша -> Сашура - Шура.

In nowadays - Shura is short variant of Alexander only.
But in 19th centyry it was Alexey's short name

Алексей - Алексаша -Саша - Сашура -Шура

Now nobody remember it..

'Александр' is my younger brother's name. We mostly call him 'Саша'. This is because I have and older sister who's name is Александрa. Who we call 'Шура'. I have 7 siblings.
