So which one would a cool kid in russia use ? If his parents were crazy enough to name him this in the first place... ?
His parents would choose the modern variant, of course, which will be written in his birth certificate and I doubt that he would prefer being called Матфей.Quote:

Hrmn, I've only ever heard 'Мэтью' or 'Мэтю' (whichever one is correct). That's pretty interesting.
The difference between them is that “Матвей” and “Матфей” are Russian analogues of English “Matthew” while “Мэтью” or “Мэтт” are the same “Matthew” and “Matt” but written with Russian letters. Their purpose is just to transfer English sounding.
By the way, same with your name. “Николай” is Russian analogue for English “Nick” while “Ник” is not a Russian name. It is the same word “Nick” but written in Russian.
So, am i gunna need to write Мэтт on my visa and papers and stuff ?
I think you should transliterate what's written in your passport.Quote:

But at least you get the fun of seeing how they chose to transliterate it when you receive your visa :)
I wish i had a cool nickname though :(
You mean like 'мародер'
Or were you thinking of something more traditional?
No, like Матик or something, c'mon guy, you know how russian names work, get real !
Мотя ;) :Р
I knew one guy whose nick was Матик, but I did know his real name.
Sweet. матик it is ! So the legacy begins !
Ha, I like that! :wink:Quote:

Well, just wanted to say that in my БИБЛИЯ, the book of Matthew is referred to as От Матфея.
Short for Матвей is Мотя, although Мотя is also short for the female name Матрена.Quote:

yes, it should. But sometimes little Russian kids say "хочете" too.
I did not mean any offence, I was just stating the fact.Quote:
