    Алексей.
    It's pronounced Ah-lik-se-y ("s" is soft)
In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

Most common short forms are Алёша/Лёша (Alyosha/Lyosha).

    Definitely not.

An English person will pronounce that as Алиоша, with a whole extra syllable.

А мне кажется, что Alyosha будет звучать как "Аль-йоша", что очень часто характеризует плохое произношение иностранца.

Да, an English speaker will pronounce Alyosha as Альйоша. But at least it still only has three sylables, like in the original Russian.

Aliosha would be pronounced with 4 sylables:

There is no closer approximation. Remember that English has no palatilization.

Offtopic, but once I saw a group of French people boarding here in Nizhny Novgorod on a flight of Tatarstan airlines to Moscow. It was originally S7's Boeing 737 but later it was for some reason replaced by an old rusty Tatarstan's ТУ-134 with a large writing "ТАТАРСТАН" on it. Apart from being obviously surprised to see this amazing vehicle, they tried to read the writing on it. They resulted in something like "ta ta pshta", which seemed to amuse them a lot and they repeated it over and over.
