    common animal names

I am wondering if there are any common animal names. Some common ones in the USA are fido for a dog or Mr/Mrs wiskers for a cat, etc...
In my Russian book they have a dog named belka. Just wondering...

    Dogs: Bobik, Tuzik

    Cats: Murka, Barsik
    Свет
    С утра запутается в шторах и цветах,
    Которые ты забываешь поливать.
Тебя не радуют весна и пение птах,
Ведь снова ты должна любовь свою порвать,
    Ведь снова ты должна...

Белка и Стрелка are the first dogs that flew into space and came back in 1960.

Шарик is a common name for not pedigree dogs.

I remember a famous Russian "space" dog named Лайка. I always thought that she was the first dog in space!?

Yes, she was the first but she didn't come back , Belka and Strelka were the first that came back.

I told alexei that my dog was named Max and he was like "man that's wierd" and i was like "meh".

    dogboy

I've recalled one human name for cats - Васька. Pretty common in the country.
There's even a proverb - "А Васька слушает, да ест".

My friend's mum has a pedigree chowchow and being a snooty person she likes to tell everyone she meets what its name is - she goes it's Robin of Great Moor (or something equally silly) and I go Robin, well, that'll be Bob, right, well, then it'll be Bobik in Russian (in Russian бобик is a popular enough name for mongrel). Talk about a putdown of a century, eh.

That reminded me of T. S. Eliot's poem

    The Naming of Cats

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
    It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, or George or Bill Bailey -
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter -
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum -
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
    And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover -
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
    His ineffable effable
    Effanineffable
    Deep and inscrutable singular Name.
Есть люди, в которых живет Бог. Есть люди, в которых живет дьявол. А есть люди, в которых живут только глисты. (Ф.Г.Раневская)

I have an English friend whose name is Robert but everyone calls him Robin or Bob. BTW, check this link out for other diminutives of that name: http://www.nireland.com/anne.johnston/Diminutives.htm
