If you are indeed Croatian Mr. croatian, then I have no idea. However if you're American you're screwed and will be lucky to even get a visa let alone live in a flat.

Lucky to get a visa? Whatever.

There are websites offering apartments for tourists.

I am Croatian. I know that I will need vaucher for visiting Moscow. I called Russian embessy in Zagreb and they explain me all about vaucher. But I'm still looking for place to stay. I found few nice and not expensive hostels (like Sweet Moscow, Godzila etc) but I would like to try to find flat to rent for a week. Do you know some russian sites where I can look for prices and flats? I found some websites on net but would like to search more. I would like to stay near Novye Cheremushki Metro station, maybe one station up or down from that station but not far from there. I would be glad to hear from Moscow people is there any place to stay near there?
    Thank you for answering.

Flats in Moscow are VERY expensive. You could end up paying more than you would at a hotel, definately more than a hostel. Also one week is not enough time to register in a flat and not possible if you have a tourist visa. And if you look at all like a foreigner you will get stopped by the cops for a registration check. Better choice is a hostel or hotel. The Izmalovsky complex is usually a lot less expensive than the center.

I don't know JB. I remember a bunch of people renting a flat for one week in St. Petersburg and they were all on tourist visas. It was very expensive, but they were 4 people to share the cost, so it turned out to be very cheap after all. They didn't have any trouble with registering... maybe the agency they went through sorted it out for them?

Moscow is a tough town compared to St. Petersburg. I was in SP 1 year ago and never saw cops in metro or on the streets stopping people for document checks. In Moscow all the central metro stations, Red Square, tourist hangouts and clubs are all crawling with cops. Due to all the terrorism bombings of course it is necessary for increased security. But if they see your documents are missing the correct registration stamps you face an official fine, an unofficial fine, and possibly a trip to the metro or local police station (bad idea!!!). As for the tour companies putting a bogus stamp, it is now getting risky. Last month it was on the news about a crackdown on these "registration for sale" companies and people who get caught can be deported or have their fun vacation turned into a miserable experience (courthouse tours ).

1/12 years ago is pretty recent. I am just surprised so much has changed since the 2 years I was there. I thought the police was very present, maybe a little less than in Moscow, but not by that much.

But I bow down to your longer and more recent experience

Their lack of free online content and steep price for mags is a real turnoff. Your best option is to go to Barnes and Noble and read it there. Then leave...
