Thread: Я пишу музыку? Quick question over definition

I write, record and produce music in my spare time... I was told Я пишу музыку by one of my lecturers, but Писать means to write, right? Any suggestions for a word to use, or different ways to say it?

Yes писать is a right word, because you write down the notes to the paper. If you compose music then say - Я сочиняю музыку.
Я музыкант, и кое-что сочиняю сам - I am a musician? and even compose something myself.

I record some music I play and compose myself- я записываю кое-какую музыку, которую сам сочиняю и играю.

But the phrase "я пишу музыку" is very good to say that you are a composer.

Я пишу музыку is perfect.
Писать means not only 'to write', but 'to compose' too.

The verb "писать" has more than one meaning. The first one is 'to to form letters, numbers etc. with a pen, pencil, or sth else', you're right.
You can say "писать музыку" or "сочинять музыку".

You can also use писать about painting

я пишу картину = I am painting a picture
