    жить

If the dictionary form is the infinitive, how are we supposed to know that the stem of жить is actually жив- when looking at a Russian-English Dictionary? Will the stem be in parantheses?

Yes. Where the dictionary lists the endings for the verb, it'll list the stem for verbs that have odd ones.

Some of the dictionaries are even very learner-friendly and have the odd forms of verbs listed...for example, mine has an entry for "иду" and says "see идти".
