Question Teaching myself Russian, will this method work?

    Privyet Comrades!

I need to learn Russian to a near fluent level within 2 years, I plan on doing an hour or so a day, and traveling to Russia whithin that time, (I can get the job I want at 18 in Russia, so have to wait 2 years, so thats kind of my time frame for learning)

My plan was to use the New Penguin Russian course book as a main course, and using Rosetta stone(maybe Totale4 with the online tutoring if I can afford it) and Pimsleur as suppliments to the main penguin course. I have a few friends on Skype who are natively Russian that speak English too that I can chat with and get help and advice from and such

Do you guys thimk my way will work, using Penguin as a main course, and Rosetta and Pimsleur as suppliments to that course, along with chatting to native Russians?

    Thanks in advance

Learn alphabet, learn basic grammar and start talking to your Russian friends in Russian ASAP (you might wanna find out who's the most patient one first)
Rely on courses only as on ADDITIONAL resource not the main one.

    Hi there ,
If you want to learn Russian in 2 years , in my opinion , you need an intensive course with a native speaker that can teach you Russian , that is the best way yo master Russian , I don't want to discourage you or something but methods like Pimsluer's and Stone's can only be helpful to familiarize you with the language , it doesn't teach you to efficiently read, speak and understand everything in it . Eventually , you need more than that

    Good luck

Valda, why did you answer him in Russian?
As for me, I can advise you what I advise always: read more books. I mean dual-language books (or parallel books) in Russian and English, you can find plenty of them in the Internet.

I'm studying English, and that's why I make a lot of mistakes. But I do not ask you to correct them, you may just stick my nose into them or more exactly stick them into my eyes.

I recommend Pimsleur. If you are clever you can find ways of getting it cheap or free on-line. If you can whip through it in a year, you'd be lucky, you would ned more lessons after that though. Learn the alphabet, look for children's books in Russian.

I used Pimsleur for about 6 months before starting on the New Penguin book. This made the book easier. And I think this method that you have chosen is good, however, unless you are a raving genius you will not be anywhere near fluent in 2 years. Especially if you only study 1 hour a day. I recommend using the cd for as many hours as you can and using the Penguin book and looking on the web for exercises to do in ALL your spare time. It will have to consume your life. And you still wont be fluent. Not unless you move to Russia and cut off all English speaking contacts.

You can reach a high level in a language in two years. But it would be easier to learn if you take classes.
