No, it was first Spanish, then pirate, then British, then independant. It is Haiti that was French. The official language of Jamaica is English but many speak creol language (modified pidgin-English).

Jamaican English, I mean the serious patois is virtually unintelligible to those who haven't been exposed to it. I grew up with plenty of people around me in north-west London that talked like that. It's truly fascinating to listen to it, but I guarantee you wouldn't understand hardly a word.
