Thread: Teaching my son

Hi there

My 4yr old loves anything to do with Russia. He can point it out on the map and tell you the capitol. When he is in his "plane" (a carboard box), he is all ways flying to Russia. I'm not one for beliving in reincarnation, but I think he must have been Russian in a former life. Can anyone tell me the best way to go about teaching him the language? I have only been learning it myself for a couple of months now.
We live right out in the sticks, where I'm sure they still think that the Russians are the enemy and that Stalin is still in power. The local library is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. I have a few text books and copies of Alice in Wonderland and Peter Rabbit.
Any help you can give me will be appreciated.

Unfortunately I can't help you much with this, I wish I could, but I just wanted to say, way to start young with him and having the desire to teach him. I am from the U.S. also, but my family is from Russia and decided not to teach me much growing up. Now I'm 28 and just starting to learn it, but have always regretted not learning earlier... Kudo's to you!

You can always order materials off the internet...go to the Getting Started With Russian and you can order some stuff of www.amazon.com. It may take a while to get to your location, but it will come. It does stink living in the South like me (moved to Atlanta when i was 11), with everybody being protestant and having english surnames...so there is not a lot of material at the bookstores around here. And i was once 4 years old and i loved my cardboard box plane/car/timemachine/submarine. I dont know if a person that young can get a grasp with russian grammer when he is still learing english grammer.

What language was "jamaica's" originally ? were they a french colony or anything ?

By the way "I am me" reminds me of when i wasn't 4, but like 12. When i first started using the internet and all these people would use the acronym "IM me" for "Instant Message me". but I didn't know it at the time... and i would be like wow... im me too... isn't that cool.

No, it was first Spanish, then pirate, then British, then independant. It is Haiti that was French. The official language of Jamaica is English but many speak creol language (modified pidgin-English).

You can get a feel for the sound of Russian by listening to radio stations on the net.
Try searching your media player for "Russian", or more specifically
Europa Plus or Silver Rain.

Jamaican English, I mean the serious patois is virtually unintelligible to those who haven't been exposed to it. I grew up with plenty of people around me in north-west London that talked like that. It's truly fascinating to listen to it, but I guarantee you wouldn't understand hardly a word.
