my friend was trying to teach me the Russian alphabet, but was having trouble explaining a few of the charactors. They were: ы and б. Do they have a sound, if not how do they effect the word?
any help is appreciated

I think, ы = "ea" in really
б = b

The letters Ъ and Ь have no sound. They only indicate the quality of the preceding consonant. The Ъ means that the consonant is not palatalized (that it is a so-called hard consonant) and the Ь indicates that the preceding consonant is palatalized (it is a soft consonant). There are some additional spelling rules where Ь is there purely historically and does not indicate palatalization.
Example:
сел 'he sat down' /s'

Лично я люблю читать Даля, но многие предпочитают не обращаться больше к его словарю по причине устарелости. У Ожегова печение - это процесс.Quote:
