I learned Russian mostly in order to be able to read Russian books and web pages. I've found that even after years of reading my speed is slightly higher when using Latin alphabet (a sort of Translit) instead of Cyrillic.
Because of this I've modified existing fonts in order to be able to read Russian in Latin everyhwere on the Web without actually converting the text or using plugins, and have put together a small web page with a description of this process and a couple of fonts here.
This could also be helpful for beginners, especially those who already speak another Slavic language, because Russian in Latin may look rather more familiar and less daunting to them than when it is written in Cyrillic.
