Mikey : Which ones are most like our rock or classic rock or alternative rock. I would like to purchase some Russian music to learn the words but Im afraid of buying pop, hip hop, disco, dance ,rap, techno, new wave or something like that that I will not like or listen to. I would prefer rock , classic rock, country, blues or something along those lines. Scott

I applaud you! (Mikey, nothing personal). Russian rock/metal bands (only my favorite ) are:
    Ария / Aria
    Алиса / Alisa
    Наутилус Помпилиус / Nautilus Pompilius
    Машина Времени / Mashina Vremeni
    ДДТ / DDT
    Агата Кристи / Agata Kristy
    Би-2 / Bi-2
    Кукрыниксы / Kukryniksy

Mikey : Which ones are most like our rock or classic rock or alternative rock.
All bands from Mikey's list are pop or something like pop.
My English isn't so good, зато с русским все в порядке ))
I'll be very thankful, if you correct my mistakes.

Thanks Pranki, No offense to Mikey but I really dislike that other stuff. Could I push my luck as far as asking which group of the ones you mentioned would be most in the style of say.
    The Stones
    Aerosmith
    Zeppelin
    U2
    The Replacements
    Stevie Ray Vaughan
    or any alternative band

Something where the lyrics would be more clearly spoken being that I am going to try to translate the words. I like metal also but for my first recording I would like to chose and artist closer to the ones above. I know this may be a dumb question in that no Russian artist are probably like any of the above. but you get the gist.

Unfortunately I don't listen these bands and can't compare.
Ария and Алиса are considered as metal, Наутилус, Машина времени, Би-2, ДДТ, Кукрыниксы are more rock than metal. Of course there are many else Russian rock bands, but I can't remember at the moment.

Hmm... I don't think it will easy for you to understand their lyrics At least different people said me that Russian pop music is more understandable than rock or metal... But don't give up! On the other hand their lyrics are more beautiful and various!

Hello! I saw your letter and just wanted to write that I like Rock music, too and I don't advice you to listen to our pop-music at all and to poison your mind with the pop music delirium. I prefer more Punk-Rock music, so I can recommend you Наив/Naiv! The "light rock-music" is Сплин/Splin, Би-2/Bi-2, Земфира/Zemfira, Люмен/Lumen, and from our classical Rock music - Ария/Aria, Алиса/Alisa, Кино/Kino!

all the band on Pranki's list are more or less ok except perhaps for B2, their sining is anyting but clear imho, don't know if'll be able to make out the words, they speak them rather than sing and in a manner where words get lengthened sometimes beyond all recognition.

The Stones, the closest Russian band would probably be Зоопарк/The Zoo Their leader Майк Науменко has been dead over a decade now but when he was around the band played classic rock with Russian lyrics

Don't think there have ever been bands similar to Zepellin and Aerosmith. Aria is more like a cross between Accept and AC/DC with russian lyrics but you might check them out anyway.

if you want clearness of lyrics so you can hear every word I'd suggest you take a look at the double album Простые Вещи by an old perestroyka era band called Звуки Му. It's not exactly rock though, a kind of experimental pop, but the lyrics are quite interesting.

Another old classic is Ноль, you can't go any more russian with rock than they did, what makes this particular band stand out is that they blended an accordion together with electric guitars so that the sound was unlike anyting else.

if you like weird lyrics, check out Мемий Троль

in any case chekc out this site

Thank you very much Yulia and Igorfa100: Exactly what I was looking for. I also like punk rock. Ya Tojha. I find pop music bad for my mind also. I new Russia had some great rock music. I listened to Taty or Tatu and felt sick doing so. It sounded like it was played right of the synthesizer. Thanks again. I will look for the CD's

I would suggest Чайф - they sing rather clear, while you will hear nothing from metal bands singing.

Blues/folk/siberian punk - EARLY Калинов Мост.

Unfortunately, there are no Russian Groups as strong as you wrote, but quite close are given by pranki. I would add: Ногу Свело, with quite special scence of humor and "Король и Шут", they are quite strong.

Земфира/Zemphira - is not exactly rock in Western way, but very talanted.

Not exactly rock, but very good music, and I am, being a fan of Classical Rock groups as you wrote would advice "Linda", "Zhanna Aguzarova". Chicherina is good as well.

Kino - strong group with very deep male voice, and very strong lyrics.

    I got some mp3s, I can share.
