Thread: After Pimsleur, then what?

I finished all 90 lessons (1, 2 & 3) in the Pimsleur series. I really liked it, and was able to keep up with the lessons. The audio really helps you to internalize the language without thinking too much about it.
My problem came when I finished, and found nothing else to keep listening to, to keep using the language. Other tape series were lame, and the language books I got from the library were kind of dull.
Any ideas about how I can follow up after finishing the Pimsleur tapes?

I'm going to Russia in 6 months, so I have time to practice.

Well, you can try this link if you want.. I use it to watch short videos... It has people talking in russian in the video, then the dialogue below it... If you want to learn more in depth about how the language works try "The penguin russian course" book.. That seems to be the most popular and i use it as well...

Hello I have a few questions if you don't mind. I have just started the Pimsleur course yesterday. I am on the 4th lesson. Can you tell me how well you can understand Russian after completion of the entire 90 courses? Well enough to converse well with the "man on the street", or not? Also, how fast did you go through the course? I am doing about 2 lessons per day. Are there any problems with going too fast?

Some easy modules to start with are Peers: Summer, and Peers, School

Yes Danilo, you are going way too fast, unless you are a language genious or something. Let each lesson sink in for a few days at least and get a few text books for variety and grammar and more vocabulary(Pimsleur will not give you enough vocabulary you will need to do that on your own). Move on to the next lesson when only you have most it down comfortably. Admittedly, the first 4 lessons are not that hard which is where you said you are now. But how much time do devote to it?

Buy some russian DVDs e.g. here:

Sure it'll be much harder for you than Pimsleur lessons but it is really beneficial to listen to real conversations vs made up dialogues. Try to start with english subtitles to get a general idea of the movie, then switch to russian ones and then turn them off completly.

I used a similar approach but in opposite direction while learning english.

True, but beware of PAL and Zone 5 DVDs, since they most likely won't play on an average US DVD player/ TV set ( unless you have a zone-free DVD player and multisystem TV-set ).
