Well, you have to know and understand about 2000-2500 words to be able to read simple things, like songs and some storys. and that takes about 9 months to a year. i have been working for 8 months, and i'm practically there. everyonce in awhile i see a word i dont know. but now i'm really trying to master grammar, and learn words like "chlorofil" and "indiginous" well not really, but you understand. but, be warned, the most frsterating thing i think u will run into is the changing words. for example. "грусть" - this word means sad. but you will see things like "лечит от грустного", or "я грустный" this will probly piss you off extremly at first, like it did to me, but as long as you can regognizethe root word, your doing good. also, nouns can be turned into adjectives descirbing other nouns, which gets a little crazy, for example весна - spring новая весна - new spring. but, if you want to say "Spring wind" it is "весиний ветер" the noun "spring" becomes the adjective "spring". so, as you can see it is best to try to learn grammar as soon as possible. but, as long as you know alot of words, at first, it's not a big deal at all.

    Hello, welcome,
For the first few months of your study I would recommend that you get a good Russian textbook and work from that, asking questions on here if you have any problems. Just go to the bookstore and get a fairly thick book that says something like "Russian Course" or "Beginner's Russian", you know, something like that. Try to get one with a cassete or CD if you don't mind paying extra. Just make sure you avoid any phrasebook type affairs (under all circumstances do NOT, do NOT get "Learn Russian(or any other language) the Fast and Fun Way.")

You asked how long it took a non-Russian speaker to read Russian teen books. I just finished my first Russian book (YEAH!!!), written for teens or youth, anyhow I have been studying Russian for about 3 years independently. However you have to note I wasn't actually studying every night for those 3 years...a lot of times I would be bored and not study for months, and when I was in a studying mood, it was only every other night for about half an hour. It also depends on if this is your first foriegn language. Russian was my first, so it took me a while longer than it would now. But, I do notice that if you put whatever you're learning down for a while, then come back, you seem to do it better. I couldn't understand jack shit of the BBC Russian broadcasts I was listening to, so I quit for a while, then I came back and I could actually understand them almost word for word! It's like guitar, too, I seemed to get better after quitting for a while. Maybe you brain needs time to process learned information.

Don't worry about the hard and soft signs at the moment or you will probably turn out like me. Got pissed and didn't study for three months.

2-i heard and learned the from the first cd..its actually good.it gives u time to pronounce the words..it tells u to say the word "part-by-part".it really helped me
3-The problem was how will i spell them correctly?

    я немного понимаю по-русский
вы понимаете по-английский ? (i suggest using ты понимаешь)
    хорошо

Although, the online translators are not that great. you should really know what you are doing first, cuz they can mess you up, and they are usually only good with 1 or 2 word translations, they wont help you at all even with some of the most simple sentences... so best to just ask somone. i only use the translator for translating words i find on the internet from russian to english, never english to russian, just, ask somone.

No man, IMHO you are wrong. You have to know less than 1000 roots of the words but if you know how prepositions, suffixes and endings change the word meaning your vocabulary will grow up in 3-4 times ...and that takes about 9 months to a year.

The Russian audio cd you got should have come with a booklet. This is why you do not know how to write them. I think it's going to be extremely hard for you to pick up on the prepositions at first without a booklet. In something like Ты хочешь пойти в театр в девять часов? the в is so soft that you might miss it completely if you aren't expecting it(although in a sentence like this, the first one should be easier to hear than the second one since it will melt into the vowel ending of пойти).
