    hello, I'm new

Hello, my name is David and I am a 19 year old college student living in Odessa Texas in the USA. I took Latin in high school, but did not retain much at all except for the history, I am a huge history fan. I know a bit of Spanish, I understand much more than I speak however and can barely write the language at all.

I 'started' learning Russian about 3 months ago, but many things distracted me and I'm just now getting back into it. I have forgotten nearly everything I learned, which admittedly was not much, however I have found the books I bought back then and was wondering what everyone thought of them as learning aids.

I have the New Penguin Russian Course, and Living Language: Russian. So far I think the New Penguin is much better, I am focusing mainly on the written language for now.

This looks like a great forum to meet people and learn about the Russian language and culture. I plan to stick around and learn as much as I can

Hello, my name is Steve and I am a 17 year old college student living in Chicago Illinois in the USA. I took Russian in high school, and retained basically everything I learned including the history, I am apathetic as far as history is concerned. I hate the Spanish language, as it reminds me of immigrants.

I 'started' learning Russian about 3 years ago, because I was required to in order to graduate. I haven't forgotten anything, except perhaps the really long words I once knew to impress people.

I used special books designed by my high school. I think the third year course was by far most informative, focusing on Nineteenth-century literature.

This once was a great forum but now is going to the proverbial dogs. If you stick around maybe you can balance out the growing crappiness.

Hello David, I'm new too. I'm 20 and I am really interested in learning Russian. So far, I know the first 7 letters of the alphabet, lol. I can only pronounce them but couldnt tell you what they look like!

Hope you find all the help you need, as I need it too

Blackmage - I just moved to C-U a month ago, don't really know anyone though. And I think this site is great, what has gone wrong with it?
There's no limit to what I can learn... I just wish my eyes would stop crossing... lol!

You must hate English language as well since immigrants brought it to where you live now.

Well, when my family moved here they were called "colonists."

Out of curiosity, they were part of the people who arrived between 1600 and 1800 because as you know after this date they were no longer colonists? You already know that people from Spain were also colonists so Spanish language can't remind you of immigrants.
I don't see much difference between immigrant and colonist when both of these kinds of people settle on the land that already belongs to some other people.

There were also people who believed in... what's the name of the dude... ah yes.... God... . And because of that they thought they could and were allowed to do anything in the name of this dude, simply because they stupidily thought it was right to them.
Still nowadays a lot of people do think they will get an answer back if they face the sky while asking to do something.

But here is the flaw in your thinking. You see Indians didn't understand how the land can be owned and said that no one could actually own it. .........So when the English Colonists arrived in the Americas they found a lot of free land available!!!!!!!!

It's a different way of thinking. Some will think of themselves as part of the land and others will think that if it doesn't physically indicate already owned then they will automatically believe it belongs to them.
Isn't the same kind of thing in Australia but instead of Indians it's Aborigines?

I don't like using those smileys, either. I've offended people, too. I say if people don't get your joke, instead of a smiley, give em a frowney.

    My bad then.
The thing is when the joking part is not obvious it's kinda hard to smile at it. The cute smiley's, like you said , can be useful as to make sure everybody gets the joke. Not all of us are English native speakers.

It's not just humor but dark humor. You know like the moon... the side you can see and the other one you can't... you know the dark one.

Well, actually, the other side of the moon isn't dark. When we have a new moon, which side of the moon do you think is lit up? :P
