    Greetings

Hey all, I was on exchange in Sweden last year and went on a trip to Saint Petersburg. I absolutely loved the place and the people I met and I can't wait to go back. This has inspired me to learn the language. I decided not to use a language school, but want to try to teach myself. I just ordered the Pimsleur course - seems like a good place to start judging from other posts.
Anyway, looking forward to chatting with you all.

    Cool....I'm also learning by myself.
I also have the Pimsleur course. Very good for your pronunciation but not for learning alot of words. I also have the Rosette Stone method. Less good than Pimsleur when it comes to pronunciation but much better for grammar and learning words. But the nice thing about Pimsleur is that you can put it on your Ipod and use it everywhere. Even when you go to sleep you can put it on and just listen to it.
    Good luck!

ps. Oh , and a tip. Give the program Skype a try. It's a great internet voicechat application. You might be able to talk to native Russians with it. I tried it and it works great and if you find some nice people that want to help you it's really cool.

Cool, thanks for the advice. I'll check out the Skype program, becasue there aren't too may Russian speakers in the middle of Australia!

I read on another website that it can take three or four years of intensive study to gain a useful working knowledge of Russian. What do others think of this statement?

From my experiences, I'd well believe it. It's going to be different for everybody though, the exact amount of time they put into it, the motivation and their own aptitude for learning languages. Also, the methods they use. It's a long journey you're undertaking ...but an interesting one.

That's odd. I speak Aussie English and one thing that I have noticed is that, the people I have met who speak English not so well such as tourists and new immigrants here in the USA, can not tell that I have an accent. They find it difficult to tell me apart from Americans.
