Thread: Let's make a forum for the Latin language

I think we should

Latin is soo cool and has a grammar similar to that of the Russian language.

I know Latin to a good extent but not quite well.

If we pull it off together I think we'll all become well-oriented linguists and the whole world would envy us vehemently and suffer from an ardent jealousy of us.

What do you guys opinionate?

I might have supported a Pig-Latin forum but this is going too far

consilium optimum est.

But would anyone use it?

I think we should make a Hindi forum. I'm learning Hindi. It's a major world language, I think it's 4th or 5th by population. But I doubt anyone else is learning it.

This is off-topic, but how come no one has posted in my thread? Doesn't anyone else like Vysotsky?

Yes don't you know that's what the ghostbusters speak ? So they can interegate those pesky ghosts and goblins. That's exactly why people learn latin, to talk to dead people. Man you're so smart !

Why don't you just check yourself. I realize when you are so much smarter than the internet, and everyone else on it, it can be difficult for your mind to condecend to "it's" level so you can navigate. But please try.

I don't know, how useful is Latin, but it is used still -- in medical prescriptions, for exanple.

I like latin, but i think a topic in the "General Discussion" forum is enough. We don#t need a latin forum

Oh, but a Latin forum would be so rocking! We could have endless debates about the proper pronunciations...Ecclesiastical Latin, or Reformed Classical? Does Neo-Latin have a place in today's world? My oh my, the possibilities are endless!

I'm replying because I must agree with what you said.

Besides, it's the root of most Western european languages. And it did influence English and German in terms of vocabulary.

But that's just me.

Some thoughts about why people learn it. Well one reason is perhaps nerdness the other would be an access to those HUGE amounts of literature in this language, many of which is available on the Internet. Some people like reading things exactly as they were written, you see... I for one tend to think that there is no such thing as an adequate translation in this world yet. This is completely different topic though.

I agree that this particular community is probably not really into all this ancient stuff... I mean, people over here tend to learn living languages, not ancient ones. And speaking of the community, I have to recommend those who really want some Latin the fine forum at http://www.textkit.com, for all your Lating and Attic Greek needs No Russians there, though.. oh well.

The "languages other than Russian" forums are mostly dead, so that's probably why MasterAdmin doesn't want to make more.
