    Sauna terms

    Hope you can help.

I am looking for information re: sauna and related sayings and terms.
If possible, terms in Russian and English (i.e. translations) are appreciated.
-what is the proper name for sauna (most frequently used names).
There seem to be a variety of meanings assigned to the name sauna,
    for instance
    - just raw heat
    - heat with steam ("birch soup" dripped over hot rocks)
    - heat with steam, accompanied by beating with birch веник
    - any of the previous may be followed by immersion in cold water, or
    rolling in snow or both???
    - are there specific names for any of these types of sauna, or are
they lumped under one all-encompassing name or term. I imagine
that different regions have different terms.
-what is the term used to describe beating with birch веник
-what are some of the phrases used with sauna (I have heard one "to lift-up with steam")

Let's have some fun with this topic. Serious answers please.
    BB

    Let's see...
Баня (русская баня) is used for Russian sauna and some others (e.g. Турецкая баня).
Сауна is used for Finnish sauna.
BTW I think in English there is also a term "bathhouse."

All of the previous are done in баня, there's no special "saunas" for each of them. Usually hot rocks are dripped just with water.

-what is the term used to describe beating with birch веник
    Парить (someone), париться (oneself).
Latter can refer to the whole process of being in sauna.
-what are some of the phrases used with sauna (I have heard one "to lift-up with steam")
"to lift-up with steam" = поддать пару.
Парильня (парная) - room with the hot rocks. Usually divided from the place for washing.
Полок = shelf for sitting or lying in парильня. It is usually of several levels, the higher the hotter.
Веник can be not only берёзовый (birch), but also дубовый (oak), липовый (lime-tree, linden) and even еловый (fir).

    Otlichno!!!

    That "Saunaab" Is finally here!!!.....

    Sadly though Sweden is of the few countries who dont use the word sauna (other than if speaking finnish...) but has swedish word for it;
"Bastu" Perhaps they claim it their invention....hardly though.......

Well, perhaps "Bastuaab" jsut doesn't do it....hmm....yes...well....

Please, Zhenya, don't revive all those old threads! Look at poor Pravit dying from convulsions! It's simply inhumane, I tell ya.
