    By the way, I was really confused by this part:

    А люди проходят... И нет, чтобы флягу
    Хоть кто опустил бы в мой чистый поток
    .
    I finally decided that the crayfish means to say: "I wish that someone would accidentally drop a flask (full of alcohol) in my river, so that when the person put his hand in the water to get the flask, I could grab the person's hand -- however, no one has dropped a flask yet."

    But it's possible that I'm misunderstanding the grammar. How would this be written in "normal prose" Russian, instead of a стихотворение?

    No. "Опустил" does not correlate with accidental dropping. It means a deliberate action, presumably with the purpose of filling a flask with drinking water, as the stream is stipulated to be clean.
