У меня слово в слово такая же хрень.

A direction, I assume, rather than a position.

Похоже, северо-восток и Бостон заполонили наши соотечественники.

North East - I think, it's because we have been tAUght (not [tot] ) British variant here in schools and universities, wich is closer to NE American accent.
