Moscow authorities do have a sense of humour.

Look what they've done to Juriy Dolgorukiy monument :

I wouldn't have thought their sense of humour was enough for that but I'm pleasantly surprised.

This article says that at first people didn't know this was Luzhkov's order and not some vandals.

VM will probably say that Luzhkov has sold his soul too. It's interesting that the article I linked to says it's Santa Claus in the title , but in the text they say Дед Мороз, other articles don't mention Santa at all. But I don't think it's Santa Claus because of the other attributes such as the coat's length etc.

Actually, I have to edit this a bit. It is really sad that even the top elected people believe that they are gods and can decree and do anything they want - walking examples of the maxim "absolute power corrupts absolutely." So it is no wonder that the lowlevel колежский ассесор person can put the squeeze on you for a bribe before giving you what, according to his job description, he should be giving you for free. Russians must be flabbergasted when they go in to the US embassy for a visa and see it works without bribery. (I hope that's true, but I don't really know). Personally, I don't think I can be any more disgusted than I am about the abuse of power - in any society, not just Russian. Jeez, look at whatshisname in WhiteRussia. I have experienced it first-hand (working in the US federal hierarchy).

And, of course, Юрка is not the top of the pyramid - you-know-who is, его Превосходительство. This behavior is even more blatant than what we see here in the US, where NGO groups and the media are watching elected officials all the time, trying to catch them in the act.

Russians are usually frustrated when they go in to the US embassy for a visa because the level of bureaucracy and rudeness is truly apauling. And where there's rudeness and bureaucracy, bribery is rife.

Muscovites, your monuments are being turned into Western Xmas drag queens and all you can say is "wow, they have a sense of humour". Shame on you. We in St Pete do not spit in the face of History.

As for Chaika's comments regarding visas.

I have got visas from the Russian embassey in London twice without any problems. A fee doesn't count as a bribe. The type of people that need the visa NEXT DAY and pay loads are people who are disorganised and have left it to the last minute.

And if you do it by post you can't get bribed :P

And the president of Belarus' is Aleksandr Lukashenko.

The American Embassy in Moscow makes the Russian Embassy in America look like a bastion of friendly customer service.
