    Уй

    I saw the following letter combination today for the first time, and I have no idea how to pronounce it. The combo is Уй. Usually I can either pronounce it or evetually figure it out, but this just throws me for a loop . I did not even know й could come after У. Would it be pronounced somethin like oo or ooee or am I totally missing something. Could this be somesort of typo that I saw?

    depends - how do you pronounce "buoy" the thing that floats in the water? Or "boy"? In Russian it's like "boy" but with a long "oo". It's not like fooie, which is foo-ee, but "fooy" if there were such a word.

    The й following a vowel is pronounced like english "y" following a vowel. SAY would be in Russian spelling СЭЙ, buoy would be БУЙ. Our month of May just passed is май.

    You will find the letter combination pretty often in imperatives, for example:

    Аттакуй - attack!
    Голосуй - vote!
    провоцуй - provocate!

    basically any verb with the -овать stem

    A long time ago a grad student I knew got a Fullbright grant to study in Moscow. His last name was Huey. I suppose he spelled it Хюи though.
