Most people pronounce Ы with some assistance of their tongues. Here is the detail description how it technically can be done:

Элементарно. Так, как учат правильному произношению логопеды: объяснить положение губ, языка (пусть улыбнется, скажет «И» - это проще. Потом берете карандаш или ложку и отодвигаете кончик языка назад. Язык при этом должен быть «бугром»), а также показать на личном примере. Все просто. Главное – объяснить.

If I try to pronounce Ы that way, it sounds somewhere in my head. Personally, I normally pronounce Ы using mostly muscles of my throat with flatter tongue, and Ы also sounds there in the throat. Probably pronouncing Ы that way is harder for foreigners, since it is closer to throat singing and takes more efforts to master.
