    неопознанный летающий объект (НЛО)

Okay, so I know that Unidentified Flying Object is неопознанный летающий объект (НЛО) in Russian, but when speaking how is НЛО pronounced, especially in the plural? In English it is easy to hear the difference between UFO and UFOs. What is the difference in Russian when pronouncing НЛО (singular) and НЛО (plural)? I can see at wiktionary that when saying the full term in word form that there are different endings for the singular and plural forms, as would be expected. BUT when saying the letters is there a difference in the way the singular and plural forms get pronounced? Wiktionary says that НЛО is indeclinable, but does that mean that the singular and plural forms are pronounced the same? Also would НЛО be pronounced EN-EL-O or just as a single syllable (nlo) as is the case with США?

НЛО is pronounced Энэло. Whether it's singular or plural does not matter.

I do not claim that my opinion is absolutely true.

Also note, that "неопознанный летающий объект" is masculine by definition. But "НЛО" is used as neuter very often.

Yes. The last syllable is stressed: [энэло́].

«США» is often pronounced like [сэшэа́] (3 syllables). «сэ» and «шэ» are alternative, colloquial, names of the letters «эс» and «ша».

Often? Have you ever heard США pronounced differently?

Would love to hear an example. Never ever heard it pronounced [сша], it's always [сэшэа], although unstressed syllables might be mushed a little but never to a point where it all becomes just one syllable.

There was a political journalist in the Soviet TV, who pronounced США as a one syllable word [сша]. I think it was Сейфуль-Мулюков. The usual pronunciation is [сэшэа].

НЛО is often pronounced as [энэло].

И я, как тот журналист, произнесу США как один слог. Не помню, как в советские времена говорили, но сэшэа как-то режет слух. К тому же с детства вдолбили, что нельзя букву с назвать сэ, только эс. Например: СССР - [эсэсэср].

На форво все как один сказали [сэшэа]: США pronunciation: How to pronounce США in Russian , так что очевидно, что отстала я от времени.

Для меня произнести [сша] довольно трудно, т.к. по правилам русского произношения [с] должна ассимилироваться со следующей шипящей. Например: "с шишкой" - [шшишкай].

[сша] так и хочется "поправить" до [шша], ну а [шша] звучит как-то совсем пренебрежительно.

Если говорить не быстро, то произнести нетрудно. Вот, например, один россиянин вроде нормально звучит: сшалить pronunciation: How to pronounce сшалить in Russian

    Забавно. А ведь действительно: ГСМ=гэЭСэм, КПСС=кэпэЭСЭС, СНГ = ЭСэнгэ.
Но чёрт побери, я никогда нигде не слышал чтобы США произносили иначе нежели СЭшэа.
По нормам ведь реально надо ЭСшэА... Хмм...
