    Знаешь

Are those words pronounced Знаеш? If so, why is the ь there?

Some words ending with ш are spelled with added soft sign. ш is unpaired hard, and so the soft sign isn't telling you anything about pronunciation. It's a spelling convention.

Most of the nouns (usually, mascul. gender) ending with ш DO NOT REQUIRE ь sign at the end. Examples: ёрш, пунш, куш (all masculine, 2 склонение).

But if it's feminine, ь is used. Examples: мышь, глушь, пустошь (all feminine, 3 склонение)

In case with verbs шь (знаешь, думаешь, etc) will be the ending. In this case YOU CANNOT OMIT the ь sign, because this is the rule for spelling of verb endings.

At the end of the word шь and ш are pronounced as a hard sound. This is the rule.

The soft sign is not spelt at the end of the words after sibilants:

    1. If the noun is masculin плащ, луч
    2. If it is gen. pl. of feminine nouns, which end with a in the nom. sing. туч (от туча), крыш (от крыша)
    3. Adverbs уж, замуж, невтерпёж

In other cases write the soft sign. Suffixes ся, те do not influence the soft sign: моешься, режьте.

The Ь is there because of the history of Russian. It's like asking why the E is in the English word MINE - it is not pronounced either.
