Because innocent people suffer of lies. For example, formerly many people spread lies about Jews and then came other people who believed in these lies and killed them in pogroms.
If the state closed the newspapers that were spreading slander and blood libel, those people would be alive.

Democracy cannot normally function if the people is bathed in streams of blatant bullshit. To vote consciously the voters should be correctly informed.
