    How bad is it?

I recently stumbled upon an article on the BBC website saying Moscow is swamped by migrants from Central Asia. I know the severity of the matter since I live in a country swamped by migrants from Mexico. Also Italy and other parts of Europe are undergoing a massive invasion of African migrants. All that is totally believable as indicated by a new book that came out stating that if the trend continues all of Europe will be completely overrun in 50 years.

Centarl Asia was a part of the Soviet Union not so long ago. So those people are not completely foreign.

It's been quite a few decades since the far-right fantasizes on Europe being taken over by hordes of aliens. Can't see them, just like I can't see all the XXIst century's wonders many promised us, but for some reason, people keep believing in these theories, although they do not believe in flying cars any more. Go figure.

It's bad enough! It is because of these central Asians that Putin introduced tough visa regulations. But unfortunately these new regulations also keep out Westerners and have made life tough! One thing I learned was, when buying things at the flea markets, to stay away from the (Del.L.) and try to deal with Russians if you can find one. (Del.L.) can be real jerks if you don't like their prices or if you are "no use" to them!

    Re: How bad is it?

I agree, this kind of question serves no purpose and might stir up problems.

Agree with the person who said that the visa regulations between Shengen countries and Russia are bad. I think it's always been like that though, and from Russia's perspective I think they'd like to lift the restrictions, but they will not take the first step unless Europe reciprocates.

Some English tips since everybodys' signature say you want it... (?)

Anti-social behaviour = Stealing, being very drunk, attacking people on the street, swearing, shoplifting..... Strictly speaking I am not sure if a post in a forum can actually be anti-social, but the meaning was perfectly clear and it did not look very strange to use this word.

    Picture of some anti-social people

Lampada's English is really, really good, but I just want to say that the best way to express her warning is:

Please note that anti-social or inflammatory posts....

"Please note...." is a polite, formal (and somewhat snotty) way to say "Don't do this, or you will be in trouble....!"

Other ways to say it is "Please be aware that...." or "Take note: Anti-social and...."

"Alien" in this context means 'stranger'. For example an American person is an alien in Russia. If he has been sneaking into Russia without a visa and without registering with the police, or if he works without a work-permit, then he is an "illegal alien" and can be deported.

Sting: I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien, I'm an Englishman in New York....

    Re: How bad is it?

I thought being antisocial meant "shunning contact with others". Not something you can easily do while posting on some internet board.

    Re: How bad is it?

yup, I think that's right. It is another meaning of the word.

I used to think, just like you, that it meant shunning contact with others. That's what it sounds like!

But in UK media it's always used to describe hooligans, youth gangs etc... whereas you rarely see it used to describe withdrawn people.

Perhaps Rockzmom sees this and can give us her view.

    Re: How bad is it?

i dont see anything wrong with my question to be honest- it does not reflect my opinion in any way shape or form. and really- my question was ALOT less inflamatory than this remark made by another user here "One thing I learned was, when buying things at the flea markets, to stay away from the Ajiberjhanis and try to deal with Russians if you can find one. Ajiberjhanis can be real jerks if you don't like their prices or if you are "no use" to them!" how come this statement is not removed? this directly reflects this person's aversion to azeri people. just saying- what i said can be considered no way racist, it was a question about racism.

    Re: How bad is it?

I don't know what you said, because I didn't see the question. If you say you are not a racist, everybody believes you, don't worry. I agree with you that the comment about Azerbadjanis was questionable. Anyway, you could take the exact same sentence and change the nationalities to French and Algerian or a number of other possibilities and some would agree, others would say it was racist. Nothing new under the sun...

The original poster had a little agenda with his question though, no doubt.
The BBC, which he is "quoting" would definitely not use the type of language that he is using in his post!
The below "dissection" of his post might be interesting to advanced English learners:
(Thanks Rockzmom for the tips about editing text! )

Blue = Word that is not correct in the context. The author should check these words in a dictionary.
Red = Inflammatory choice of words, intended stir up strong feelings in the reader. Also known as agitation, propaganda.

    1) The one difference between the United States and Russia in relation to their Southern neighbours is that Russia (during Soviet times) spent incredible sums on building infrastructure, schools, hospitals and factories in these countries. I think the relationship between the United States and Mexico is a different one. What goes on between Russia and the areas in Caucasus and Central Asia is between those countries; a complicated matter which is neither the EU's nor the US' business.

    2) I was actually recently in Milan and Rome and did not notice any "invasion" whatsoever. There are some problems with North African economic migration, but the EU is helping Italy and Algeria to improve the situation. Your gloomy predictions are not helpful or even very realistic.

Sorry to be behind the eight ball on this one...

This topic has me caught right in the middle. Some of you may know that I am married to "one of them there darn aliens" who is now a card carrying American. So, I have very strong views both pro and con on the topic of immigration both legal and illegal. Trust me, you would be surprised.

Now, about the shunning and anti-social... To us over here in this area of the U.S. and others who are near the Amish, "shunning" is an "Amish" term and Robin might be able to back me up on this as it comes from German. The Amish call shunning Meidung, the German word for avoidance. They use shunning to excluding, punishing, and shaming excommunicated members. If you are shunned, your family cannot speak to you in public. Your neighboors and relatives, will not speak to you either. It is like you are invisible. You are dead to them.

Anti-social, has two means... It is someone who does not want to be around people ("I am feeling anti-social today") OR a person who has continuous conflict with society and acts out those conflicts. Examples are: Lack of remorse; reckless disregard for safety of self or others; rebellious teens with green hair and pierced skin; EMO kids I guess would be the correct term these days... the list goes on...

So there is a difference, they are not NOT in contact with society, they are actually harassing society. Sort of like Trolls on a forum? They are pit bulls, picking a fight and they don't care. They don't care that they look or act differently or if they kill anyone or offend anyone or stir up the pot. They might even get a thrill from it.

Then the other side of the term is when you are blue and having a bad day and just don't want to be with anyone... You DON'T want to be sociable. You just want your half gallon of ice cream and your favorite movie or CD and to be left alone.

    Does this help???
I only speak two languages, English and bad English.
