Long live america the land of great and free people
I don't think he did. Most countries didn't. But Putin has greatly benefited from the high oil prices the invasion of Iraq caused; Russia being an oil rich country and all.Originally Posted by patriot

Fallacy. We didn't buy Iraqi oil before the war, so the decrease in supply was not the cause of the increase in prices. Some potential causes of the increasing oil prices include [i]speculation[i] into instability in the oil production industries in the Middle East (namely Saudi Arabia), and general oil speculation extending into the long-term, making price, to a large degree, artificial.Originally Posted by TATY

Once again America isn't the whole world. And general instability in the Middle East = higher prices, and obvioulsy Iraq has hardly helped the situation in the region.Originally Posted by BlackMage

I think you guys misunderstood his question. He wants to know whether the Russian Ambassador to Iraq gave them US military invasion plans. Apparently he thinks that the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs runs this site or something... The fact of the matter is, that practically speaking, it doesn't matter -- except that they gave them bogus plans that worked to our advantage. Was Russia doing us a favor in "leaking" the plans? Did Putin want to hobble the US in Iraq? Was it the act of a rogue ambassador who has already been shown to be horribly corrupt? Good luck figuring this one out -- I hope you hold a very high security clearance or enjoy conspiracy fan-sites...

What do you mean we weren't buying Iraqi oil before the war? Haven't you heard of the oil-for-food plan?
It might no practilly be any difference for the US whether Russian diplomats leaked American war plans to Iraq, but it is still a gross international scandal. But what were they doing with the plans in the first place? It can't be the actions of a single person if they had to get the plans from their spy-network... dunno

Sure it could. The guy was an Ambassador -- he would presumably have access to such information, since it was really pertinent to the country he was in -- he didn't have to be on a first name basis with the mole in the Pentagon directly. Look: I have no idea. But I don't think you can automatically assume that this was something that came down straight from Putin or Ivanov or whoever -- especially given the fact that this ambassador is dirty...Originally Posted by kalinka_vinnie
I think, really, this is about like that story about the Homeland Security perv that was posted earlier: important, but not really something of major international implications. I highly doubt in ten years, or five years, or even a year this is really a big deal. The fact of the matter is this: the US and Russia both want a working-relationship (not to be confused with being best friends and warm and fuzzy feeling); we'll keep criticizing them for doing stuff we don't like, but won't really do much beyond that.

Ой, да!"Originally Posted by Scorpio
