I did. As supposed almost all of Russians of 30 and up. It was a piece included in the Russian literature subject at schools.
Don't know about now.
But it does not mean all Russians read it from cover to cover, as no guarantee a lot of them read it at all.
The red thread of the book is about conflict of generations. And, respectively, that each new generation is looking for its own ways and ideas.
What trivial, isn't it?
i just read in an other book about it. the author said that turgenjev was a nihilist and that the book would be some kind of philosophical - nihilistic statment....
i just wondered if that was true, for i cannot get it in vienna and i am much to paranoid to order it via internet.....

If you are using a Windows computer I advise you not to open it in Notepad, because it does not have MS-DOS newlines but Unix ones. It will show up correctly in Wordpad or Word (or any other decent word processor) though.
hey...thanks alot, mike!!!
Turgenev wasn't nigilist, bazarov (the main hero) was.
And it is very interesting novel, and most of Russians read it at school.
