Жизнь показала, что русские не отличаются особым цивилизационным талантом (хотя и побывали в космосе). У них сравнительно мало достижений в техническом и экономическом прогрессе, их бытовая жизнь не отличается комфортом, им трудно организовать строгую и демократическую общественную систему, они не умеют размеренно и профессионально трудиться, доводить любое дело до совершенства. Что ж, каждому своё – и этим мир и интересен.

It is from my Russian reading which talks about the strengths and weaknesses of the Russian people.

i. What does Что ж mean?
ii. And I have no idea how to break down и этим мир и интересен though I (seem to) know every word of it.

I checked through English and Chinese dictionaries, but am not sure how to understand the word here.

2. This word is derived from "мера"="measure" and it can be literally translated as "measured (in all length or all directions)". Real meaning is related to this concept: you can translate it as "systematically", "without rush (because masterplan exists with all the details)", "monotonically", "sequentially". It can be also used to characterize things like dancing movements: well-studied, smooth and experienced.

1.ii "этим мир интересен" literally => "this is why world is interesting". Second particle "и" is used to emphasize verb. So we have "and this is why world is interesting"
