    "обменять сов. см. обменивать"

I was trying to look up the word обменять and encountered some confusion...

    1) This word is not in English "Wiktionary" at all (anyone knows why..? Is it an unusual word? Wouldn't have thought so, since it means "exchange"....)

    2) I found it in Mail.ru's dictionary, and it seems to have TWO perfects
    I.e.
    Imperfect: обменивать
    Perfect: обменить AND обменять
    What is going on?

    3) Please can anyone tell me what "сов. см." stands for ?

"advise to see" or 'recommend to see' or something like that. That's my guess.

    "обменить" sounds exceedinly strange.
Whoever entered this word into Mail.ru dictionary might be tripping on something heavy.

Exactly. There is no such word. Only "обменять". May be it's not [s:1tg3s9z9]"обменить"[/s:1tg3s9z9] but "отменить" wich means "to cancel"?
Please, correct my mistakes, except for the cases I misspell something on purpose!

Ok, thanks for clarifying! I will just learn that verb pair as it is in the header and ignore the other word for the time being.

Может быть, глагол "обменить" устарелое слово? Смотрете здесь: http://dic.academic.ru/dic.nsf/enc2p/285690

Словарь, из которого это объяснение, относится к 19 веку.

Oh, yes! It's a famous Dal's dictionary. It's a dictionary of all Russian vernaculars and slangs of 19th century. Most of them nowadays do not exist at all. It is used as a historical document and as a reading for pleasure but in no way as a reference for the contemporary Russian.
"Россия для русских" - это неправильно. Остальные-то чем лучше?

Perfect example of when to use "the"!
Because that dictionary is famous, you say.

By the way, Lingvo loads that dictionary by default. I keep trying to get rid of it because I don't want a RU-RU dictionary at this point... But I am sure it's great!

Sometimes "the" can be used to show that something is "the most" of something.. or famous for something. A bit like the word "самый" can be used, I think. When you want to use "the" in that way, then you pronounce it very clearly, or in writing, make it Italic.

Strange, it's primarily old. On the same site I linked to you'll find at least two contemporary Ru-Ru dictionaries, which seem to be a much better choice. A dictionary which doesn't include the word компьютер isn't what I'd want to use today.
