    meticulous

How would that be said in Russian? (or something else similar that basically means "pays very close attention to details")

"He is a very meticulous person"

and of course, is there a word that would be similar to "anal"?

    Thanks!

Is it what you need? Both these words have a negative meaning

Meticilous: тщательный, and Rostova the english word doesn't have a negative connotation.

"Дотошный" doesn't have a negative connotation in Russian either. One more synonym: "скрупулезный".

Ummm, анальный? As in anal probe?

If you mean anal-retentive, then this word is probably sufficiently close

    занудный

занудный translates as draggy into English, so, imho, that's not the right word for meticulous.

Look at what I have found in the English dictionary.

anal or anal-retentive - giving too much attention to details in a way that annoys people

I think that the dictionary is wrong. It is hard to describe "anal retentive" and the dictionary tries to give too simple of an answer.
