    Really odd...
    1 - answer "c" (светило)
2 - no right answer (садилось)
3 - may be "c", the absent word "налетал" is better
    4 - b or c
    5 - d

Haven't checked other posters' answers but here's what I think is correct:

Солнце уже не так ярко светило с голубого неба, позже вставало и раньше ложилось; порывистый ветер подул неизвестно откуда, качал вершинами деревьев и быстро исчезал, оставив в воздухе холодевшую струю.

eh, this is what I would have said.

    1. c (the sun does not shine so brightly)
    2. d (the sun falls earlier-but I would have chosen "садилось" if it was one of the answers)
    3. a (the wind blew)
    4. b (tree tops sway)
    5. d (the wind leaves a cold stream in the air)

Must be hard to choose for you, so many answers. Rostova and I are native speakers (I answered the same - I just checked), not sure about Indra. Also, I don't think the answer "none of the above" or "missing word" is a good answer here.

Indra, "качать вершинами" - OK, "качать листьями", doesn't sound that well.

So it is natural to say
    The sun laid down earlier

All right except for "подул". You can't put "подул" here because "качал" and "исчезал" have imperfective aspect, and "подул" has perfective aspect. Therefore, "набегал" is only right variant of the given ones.

According to the textbook from which I took this exercise, the correct version should be like this:

    - Солнце уже не так ярко светило с голубого неба, позже вставало и раньше ложилось; порывистый ветер набегал неизвестно откуда, качал вершинами деревьев и быстро исчезал, оставив в воздухе холодевшую струю.

    So, Rostova and Pranki, Congratulations!

I found especially (3) and (4) difficult. Can someone explain to me why вершинами is the correct answer instead of листьями in (4).

    I think so.
"Качать" means to make something do oscillatory movement. Leaves do random movement (not oscillatory) under the influence of wind. So "качать листьями" sounds at least weird.

The sun can "вставать" but it cannot "ложиться", the sun can "садиться". Don't trust to textbooks too much.

I think, it's all right. Just poetic language.

"Солнце ложилось уже в степь. Снопы ярко-розовых лучей, скользнув по гребню крутоярья на той стороне, золотили крыши домов городка..." Б. Полевой "Повесть о настоящем человеке"
For me it sounds right especially with a word "вставало" near it

You know what? This is nuts. Time to change the textbook. Writers bend the language the way they want, it's their job, but the textbooks should not be ambiguous.

It's just shows how multifaceted Russian language is. The exercise is OK but not only for advanced users with some imagination and knowledge of literature. Some words/expressions sound unnatural to some native speakers if they never heard/read them.

Excuse me but with foreign languages it's either imagination or knowledge. This is not the way to teach anything.

Not that rigid in my opinion. In the above examples: Солнце садится - is the reply of the knowledgeable person. Солнце ложится can be used too because it's more poetic but what skills do you need to be poetic? Imagination, I guess. Of course, if someone, already said this and you have heard it, it's knowledge, not imagination.

But it is OK for me, "Kачать вершинами деревьев". What did you choose? "качать листьями"?
