No, you should use Instrumental Case with "быть" in the Past Tense:

Она очень смышлёный человек. -- Она была очень смышлёным человеком.
Он учитель. -- Он был учителем.
Он выдающийся учёный. -- Он был выдающиймся учёным.

Nominative Case is grammatically possible, but sounds as if you were from 19th century:
Она была очень смышлёный человек.
Он был учитель.
Он был выдающийся учёный.

So they only difference is that the one is old literature form while the other not.
